Dr Des Patrick
Desmond completed his gastroenterology training at the Western General Hospital and Eastern health departments in Melbourne. He then completed his sub-speciality training in inflammatory bowel disease at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s hospital with completion of a post graduate master’s degree at the University of Queensland. He was then appointed as a consultant gastroenterologist at the Sunshine Coast University Public Hospital where he remained for 7 years. He has a broad range of experience in general gastroenterology, inflammatory bowel disease and routine hepatology. He is fully accredited by the conjoint committee of the Gastroenterology Society of Australia (GESA) to perform gastroscopy, colonoscopy and capsule endoscopy.
Desmond currently holds an appointment as a senior consultant gastroenterologist at the Townsville University Public hospital and is a senior clinical lecturer with the department of medicine at Griffith University. His interests are in improving GI healthcare in regional/rural settings, evidence based inflammatory bowel disease management, intestinal ultrasound in inflammatory bowel disease, the role of the faecal microbiome in GI disease and quality of care in endoscopy.
Desmond’s wife is Townsville born and raised, so he has enjoyed many years of visiting Townsville before deciding to make the move with their three children and two dogs to enjoy the relaxed lifestyle and natural beauty of North Queensland. When not working Desmond enjoys walking his dogs, cooking, eating and travelling.
